Spring Into Action

A recent LinkedIn poster posed the question, “How do you plan a business with all this uncertainty and change?" I responded that there is never certainty in business, or for that matter, life in general.

Whether you work for a major corporation, a private practice, or operate your own business, changes will always affect you. Whether it’s tariffs, private equity purchasing your employer’s business, a health situation, or any other number of situations, none of us are exempt from uncertainty.

However, as opticians, we are often more adept to change than most professions, as we are constantly trouble shooting, looking for the best solutions for our patients, and seeking out innovations to bring the best products and service to the marketplace.

Meet The Frank Family

Thank you, Jon and Madison, for agreeing to this interview.

Your family story is an inspiration to all of us. You have three generations of Opticians in your family. Your mother and father, both Opticians, you Jon and now Madison is licensed and your other daughters are in the business. What a great story.

Q: We would love to hear about your families journey in Opticianry.

A: Madison: I became an optician to help people see the very best they can. Obviously, it’s a perk that I get to learn from my dad as well!

A: Jon: Main Optical has been in business almost 65 years. My father Paul got his optical training in 1956 and left Vorpe Optical to start Main Optical in 1961. I grew up in the optical business. As a kid I would go to work with Dad on Saturdays to do anything needed.

Q: Could you share some details about your background, including any mentors who have influenced you?

A: Jon: I passed my State Board Exam in 1989. We’ve been in business 65 years. It’s in my blood. I can’t wait to get to work every day. I take great pride in helping people with their vision. It gives me a sense of completion and satisfaction. My father (Paul Frank) was my mentor. He passed away in 2017 after being in the optical industry 61 years. My wife Lori works full time with me. She runs the business end and is capable of filling in anywhere needed. We have 4 daughters that work with us. Madison has recently gotten her license. I am so proud of her and all of them.

Q: Madison, what is your goal in the optical industry?

A: My current goals are honestly just to help everyone that comes in, to see the best they can.
